Olympic Village Visit

10/07/2024

On the 11th July 2024, Level 4 apprentices, visited the Olympic village to explore the topic ‘Sustainability, Construction and the Built environment’. Learners followed an augmented Reality trail accessed using QR codes displayed at nine key locations in the park. This educational visit helped to develop knowledge and understanding of how modern construction processes and sequences used within today’s industry respond to sustainability needs through an investigation of local infrastructure and the built environment. They got the opportunity to view modern construction in the Olympic village while exploring how different locations have developed throughout history. Learners saw first-hand how choice of materials for modern construction which considers environmental and sustainability factors can have a lasting positive impact on the built environment.

This site visit consolidated learning gained from their studies in materials and science and construction technology and gave learners the opportunity to explore cultural, social and economic sustainability at a location known as a pioneering model for regeneration.  From this visit learners were able to identify the techniques used to construct a range of civil engineering construction. They visited the Velodrome to understand why it has been named the ‘green gem among London’ and stopped at the Aquatic centre to gain a deeper understanding of how buildings get an excellent rating in sustainability that is measured through world standard assessment methods.

Lastly, water, gas, and electricity. We may take these services for granted, without the development of water, gas and electricity services our homes and the environment will look incredibly different, these services have shaped landscapes and lives. They also looked at this history to get an interest for future learning. Future learning will include how primary service (water, gas, electricity) are accommodated in buildings through civil engineering projects to allow us all to have easy access and enjoy our lives the way we do.
